Quick Chop! Flinders Street Project - Not just your average avo on toast


'Clare Valley poached eggs, avocado and lime, peas, haloumi and sourdough' - $19

It's the epidemic that has taken over our nation, avocado on toast. The green, mooshy, delicious fruit spread evenly over a thick piece of rye or sourdough has led to many being unable to purchase a house. So, when you order your avocado on toast at the expense of not being able to afford a roof over your head, you want it to be a bloody good one.

Well, my brunch-obsessed friends and I (Christina) have found our perfect one. It has been three days and I am still thinking about this brunch. Since moving to Melbourne I have had my fair share of over-exaggerated and overcomplicated brunches, so when I went for a visit back home to Adelaide, I just wanted a good, simple brekky. Flinders Street Project may be a small menu, but I often find the places with the least items are always the best. There are only eight breakfast items to choose from and my eyes went straight to the word 'haloumi', because you know, I'm only human.

The 'Clare Valley poached eggs, avocado and lime, peas, haloumi and sourdough' arrived looking Instagramable and chic. The meal was draped in rocket with a drizzle of salt and pepper. Underneath the greens was the goodness... perfectly fried haloumi that was gooey and not at all rubbery.

The real test, the egg. I split the poached egg to find a beautiful yolk that ran down onto a bed of a generous amount of avocado.

It's safe to say it was gone in minutes. My only criticism would be that I could not taste the peas. If you're going to have peas written in the title, I would like to taste them or see them. Other than that, simply beautiful.

Flinders Street Project is open every weekday 7am to 4 pm and weekends, 8am to 3pm.
