Mekko Market & Café arrives in Prospect!

Mekko Market & Café - 89 Prospect Road, Prospect SA 5082

Nestled away in a beautiful old heritage listed building on Prospect Road is Mekko Market & Café – the bustling precinct’s newest food and fashion destination! If you fancy a spot of shopping after your weekend brunch, then this is definitely a place you should check out.

Staying true to their Scandinavian background, owners Irene Kollanus, Marjukka Wilson and Tom Nilsson wanted to bring a concept that is really popular in Finland to the Adelaide market. Many cafés in Finland will also include second-hand clothing shops showcasing pre-loved items from people in the local area.

The Scandinavian influence doesn’t stop there though – Swedish-born Chef Tom Nilsson has curated a beautiful modern Australian menu that is influenced by traditional Scandi flavour combinations. We were lucky enough to try three of the items from the menu, all of which were provided on behalf of Mekko Market & Café.

Scandinavian Dream - $21.00

First up was the Scandinavian Dream - a potato crepe topped with local Harris hot smoked ocean trout, roasted beetroot purée, poached eggs, hazelnut crumb and a dill and buttermilk sauce. Irene informed us when we were ordering that this is one of the most popular brunch items - and now we know why! With perfectly poached eggs and a thin, delicious potato crepe, this dish was a real winner.

Sweet Quinoa O'Mine - $17.90

The second brunch item we tasted was the Sweet Quinoa O'Mine - sweet potato and quinoa patties with burnt broccoli, petite salad, an avocado and pepita mousse and two poached eggs. Many might shy away from the idea of 'burnt broccoli', but it was our favourite part of the dish! Tom roasts the broccoli at a very high oven temperature, resulting in irresistibly crunchy broccoli with an almost deep-fried taste. This went beautifully with the silky avocado mousse, soft sweet potato patties and gooey poached eggs.

Mekkoburger - $22.00

Moving onto the lunch section of the menu, the last item we tasted was the Mekkoburger. Sandwiched between a fresh brioche bun was a house burger of prime Angus Beef, bacon jam, cheddar cheese, gherkin, confit garlic mayo and baby cos lettuce with a side of fries. With all of those flavour packed fillings, you can't go too wrong with a burger like this! Their lunch menu also offers two vegetarian burgers and an open steak sandwich.

'May all guests who come to Mekko Market & Cafe leave as friends"

In addition to their delicious breakfast and lunch options, Mekko Market & Café also have a daily salad bar for easy take away options and have started dinner service on Saturday evenings - the perfect spot to grab a bite to eat before heading to the movies on Prospect Road!
