MiMi - The New Thai on the Block

Thai food has been popular amongst Adelaidians for many years now, which usually means we all have our favourites and regular go-to's. If you are anything like me (Amanda), in-between the old faithfuls, you love to try something new, then MiMi is that new Thai venue for you! Opened by Steven Lee who is also a part-owner of Plus 82 Pocha, which we visited back in June of 2018 for our Korean fix, we arrived at MiMi crossing our fingers hoping we would have the same tasty experience.

Tasty Thai Feast

The venue which was once cafe East of Norman (which we never visited) is a beautiful light-filled space with a clean, modern style that has you excited to enter and also linger over shared dishes and a few glasses of wine.

Coffin Bay Oysters $4.50 each

Tonight we started with the Coffin Bay oysters served with crispy shallots and nham jim sauce.  However you want to spell nam jim, nham jim, the end result of hot, sour and tangy is the same and works well with the sea saltiness of the fresh oysters. With an extra squeeze of acidity from the fresh lemon it is a wonderfully refreshing starter on this hot summer night.

Salmon with Kimchi Tomyum Broth $29

If you know me, you know I love kimchi, so I can never pass up a dish where the kimchi is the star ingredient... enter the salmon with kimchi tom yum broth. Dish of the night for us! The superbly cooked pan-fried salmon with a crispy skin sitting delicately in the well balanced tom yum broth with kimchi, Asian mushrooms and tomato was so delicious it was hard to share. The fried enoki mushrooms were a creative and divine way to further enhance this dish. We can see why this is MiMi's signature dish.

Sirloin Steak $22

The 'Crying Tiger' is a 180g Sirloin steak, thinly sliced with spicy fennel, cucumber and herb salad.  This was also another favourite dish of the night for us. The steak was lovely and tender, juicy and well seasoned with a good hit of heat. Accompanied with the spicy pickled style tangy salad, produced a dish for those that aren't afraid of a little heat on their palate.

Summer King Prawns $23

A dish that will be introduced on the upcoming menu is the Summer king prawns with tamarind caramel, shallots and coconut crisps. These were king sized prawns indeed! Big, fat and tenderly cooked, the prawns were coated in a delicious sticky tamarind caramel sauce, which worked wonders with the crunch from the coconut crisps.

Pad Thai $22

A lover of all things noodles, I can never visit a Thai venue without trying their Pad Thai and MiMi's with rice noodles, fried tofu, been sprouts, garlic chive, egg, peanuts, chilli and fresh lime gave the regular Thai diner something a little different. If you are used to having chicken and prawns in your Pad Thai, you will not see that here, instead large slices of fried tofu, which had a lovely silky texture and moreish slightly salty batter took centre stage. Good flavours and textures, just make sure to mix through the peanuts, chilli, squeeze the fresh lime and eat on arrival to ensure the noodles don't keep cooking, go gluggy and stick together.

Yellow Curry with Crispy Soft Shell Crab $28

I eat soft shell crab quite regularly but for some reason my tastebuds just don't get thrilled by it. This crispy soft shell crab in an egg and yellow curry sauce with capsicum, celery and onion had a great curry flavour and textural elements but paled in comparison to the rest of tonight's dishes. This one might be for the soft shell crab lovers only!

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at MiMi and are excited to add this venue to our Thai food go-to list. We look forward to seeing how the seasonal menu develops and return to try some new dishes, as well as reordering our new favourites.
