The Holdy - Nautical Pub Food Fun!

The Holdy - 83 Brighton Road Glenelg SA 5045

Earlier this year Dani from On The Chopping Board (OTCB) visited The Holdy to review their new menu. So when we were asked to return to try a couple of the refreshed dishes, I (Amanda) was excited to see what The Holdy had to offer. All food and beverages were provided on behalf of The Holdy.

White Wine Starters!

Stepping into the nautical themed restaurant, I felt like I should have brought a sailor hat and slipped on a blue and white striped dress to really immerse myself amongst the ship-like interior at this nearby seaside hotel.  To cool us down on this particularly balmy Spring night, we selected two nicely chilled South Australian white wines while we studied the new dish options on the menu.

400g Rib Eye $38

We couldn't pass up the 400g Rib Eye with a garlic and chive butter, served with baked chat potatoes topped with sour cream and cheese and a side of coleslaw.  The rib eye was cooked medium and maybe with a little more resting time we might not have had the pool of meat juices oozing into our coleslaw.  Thankfully the rib eye was a lovely pink inside, tender and even tastier when spread with the garlic and chive butter.

The baked potatoes were cooked well, almost fluffy inside and a classic baked combination with the sour cream, cheese and coleslaw accompaniments.  We prefer our coleslaw a little more tangy and think this creamy version would have benefited from some more acidity to cut through the richness of the potato, sour cream and large piece of meat!

Atlantic Salmon $29

My guest for the night (Lydia) ordered the Seared Atlantic Salmon Fillet with an avocado and mango salsa and coconut rice with lime. Her initial thoughts as the dish was brought to the table was that the presentation was reflective of a fine-dining experience, and not your standard pub fare. With a perfect crispy skin, the salmon was cooked ever so slightly over how we would normally like it, though nothing was compromised in the flavour. The fresh avocado and mango salsa was a perfect accompaniment to the fish, and paired nicely with the subtly flavoured coconut rice.

Overall we had a quick, simple and tasty weeknight pub meal, in a pleasant and comfortable venue conducive to good dinner conversation. With a large menu it was hard to decide which dishes to try on the night, especially with chargrilled souvlaki squid salad, and Texas glazed pork ribs calling our name but now we have another excuse to return.  So get onboard the Holdy and check out all the new dishes on offer now.
