Quick Chop! Bar Luca

Bar Luca - 52 Phillip Street, Sydney NSW 2000

Since moving to Sydney from New York, I (Mirko), have been on the hunt for a good burger. With Shake Shack being my creme-de-la-creme of burgers (yes, I know some will disagree), I have had multiple people in Sydney and in New York mention one Sydney siders name.... Bar Luca. With so many people raving about this spot, I had to pay it a visit (pre COVID-19 restrictions).

Located near Circular Quay, this casual bar setting is very lively on a Friday after work (pre COVID) so thankfully myself and a few mates have booked in advance (I am told that this is something you need to do) as you won't stand a chance otherwise.

As everyone has been talking about the burgers here, a burger is what I will be ordering. However, there are a number of different options to choose from catering for those who want beef, chicken or vegetarian options (and vegan, just let them know). I will point out upfront that if you are on the lookout for a 'Shake Shack' style burger, this is not for you (try Betty's Burgers, which I think is the closest take on Shake Shack).

Each burger also comes with a number of add-ons (at extra cost), with a few sides should you need them.

Upon multiple recommendations, I opt for the "Blame Canada" burger. One beef patty, American cheese, maple glazed bacon, maple aioli and poutine on a milk bun. I also opted for a side of fries, which on reflection wasn't needed.

Blame Canada Burger ($17) with Fries ($3)

On paper the combination of flavours seems overwhelming and overpowering with the numerous "maple" components appearing too sweet and heavy. This is not the case! The burger is well balanced with a nicely cooked patty, soft bun and saltiness from the poutine and patty balancing the bacon and aioli.

Overall it is a delicious burger which I will be back for again with the easing COVID-19 restrictions coming into play.

With that being said, Shake Shack still has my heart (and stomach)! I don't think that will ever change!
