How was the palate prepared? Heinekin
First sip mental image: Fireplace
Colour: Dark dense brown almost black.
How did it taste? The beer pours with a nice white head that held up well. The first sip instantly registers that this beer has that distinct dark ale sweetness. Past the sweetness, as the beer washed over the palate, I recognised the burnt malt, coffee and chocolate tones thanks to the inclusion of the native roasted wattleseed. The dark ale bitterness then hits the back of the palate. It’s not overly bitter. The beer strikes a nice balance with the sweetness and burnt malt/coffee tones. The mouth feel is medium. The beer’s dark/black label and name set some serious taste expectations…did I feel betrayed? A little… :-)
Under what circumstances would I drink a six pack?
After a long day skiing, back in the lodge, feet up in front of a fireplace.
Suggested accompanying food?
Due to its strong dark flavours, accompanying food needs to be just as strong. This beer needs to be drunk with a strong salty cheese and/or smoke almonds. Perfect for a pre-dinner drink or a post dinner palate cleanser with a cheese board.
